Farmers are using preventative measures, such as frost fans and irrigation, to protect their fruit crops from frigid temperatures when the mercury plummets during the flowering period. At the Hazel Dell Orchards south of The Dalles, water from irrigation makes for an icy coating for the buds and branches of budding cherry trees and for the grass early in the morning Sunday, April 20, 2008 after a cold night.
