PORTLAND, OREGON-- December 24, 2011-- Jordan Menasche and Shawn Menashe carry a box of goods, as Shawn's dad Albert Menashe walks in the foreground. Portland native Barry Menashe, 58, his two kids, Lauren, 19, Jordan, 24, cousin Albert Menasche, and his son Shawn, 32, all spent several hours Saturday in downtown Portland handing out new gloves, hats, socks and blankets to anyone who wanted them. Menashe family members have helped people at various churches and temples in recent holiday seasons, but never on this scale. They worked from two cars stuffed with 340 pairs of socks, 240 pairs of gloves, 216 knit hats and 100 wool blankets purchased from Andy and Bax. "They didn't ask for a tough life. I've seen misfortune in my family, I've seen it seen it firsthand myself," said Barry Menashe, who owns Menashe Properties, a real estate investment and management company. "We got a lot of smiles back. It's a bonus for everybody." Although Menashe loves his hometown, he thinks Portland isn't doing enough for those who are less fortunate. "I see it every day. ... It doesn't take a lot and it doesn't take a lot of time. I'd love it if our city would get some of their priorities together for people who are cold and hungry." Ross William Hamilton/The Oregonian
